When the remote shutter release is being held down, the camera just takes an still instant image, not holding for the amount of time i want. More and more, it sounds like a bad remote, but a camera reset might eliminate settings as an issue. (Apologies to the OP if you've tried this already -- my reading have a peek here
And regarding a comment further down, WD-40 is not a lubricant it is a penetrating and water displacing concoction that will migrate all over the inside of your camera.

Naturally I thought the remote was broken so I bought another one but it doesn't work either. Might drive to LA and find some Nikon shop or their El Segundo, CA service center and see if their remote does work the camera.
